Christmas at School

Hello Everyone!

Today I got back to campus armed with some bows, ribbon, and wrapping paper. I fully intended to wrap presents...and after that was done, I felt the need to wrap some more. This happened:

Now, it's not like I INTENDED to wrap the door...but I think subconsciously I bought extra wrapping paper for this purpose. I sent the picture to my roommate (she's home this weekend) and she LOVES it. We are fully going to enjoy this for the next 15 days until break.

Today's topic is going to be about having a good Christmas experience while you're either away from home at school, or just living in a tiny place where you can't get a huge tree and string lights up outside.

Here's what we've done to our room so far. Maybe this will spring some ideas for you:
1. We have a tiny Christmas tree on the windowsill strung up with lights with a sparkly pine cone as the "star."
2. We have Christmas lights strung up at one end of the room over our closets. Now, we've had these since October and will probably keep them up after Christmas, but in the Christmas season they make a lovely addition to the decorations.
3. We now have our wonderful wrapped door. It was simple and easy to do, as well as been entertaining to look at. In fact, I bought the paper at the dollar store and it only took about half a roll, so it's quite a bargain as well.
4. We are going to have a "fireplace." I bought a picture of some fire, and my roommate will be painting a fireplace hearth that we will then tape to the wall and enjoy throughout the holiday season.
5. Lastly, we have small stockings for each of us in the room (including our fish Stephan) that will be taped up on the windowsill and hang over the fireplace mentioned above.

Those are just some small decorations that you can use if you're in a tight spot. But remember, if you're in college, ask your roommate first before you go about wrapping your door or stringing lights up all over the place.

That's about it for now!

Until next time,

Back from the Break

Good afternoon everyone!

As most of you know, the school systems in Maryland (and indeed around the country) take breaks for Thanksgiving and holiday festivities of the like. That is precisely why I did not write blogs last week...or so I would like you to think.

Let's jump into it! OH MA GOODNESS YOU GUYS! It's 28 Days Until Christmas! THAT'S LESS THAN A MONTH! ARE YOU EXCITED?! I'M EXCITED!!! CAN YOU TELL?!

Well, very recently I went to the craft store with high hopes of finding a Christmas craft to put together with my family. I left however having spent 50 dollars on crafts and materials to make for my friends...and a flimsy Christmas craft to construct with Mom and Glenn...it's not all that flimsy, but I ended up more excited for the other crafts that I bought. I really do think people will enjoy them.

So, I'd like to hear what you guys are going to do for the holiday season! Are you planning on making crafts for anyone? If you are, but don't have any ideas (or aren't art savvy, like myself) you can check out the post I made a couple months back with Christmas craft ideas for any age or art preference!

I hope you find something nice if you're not making crafts, but keep in mind, a handmade Christmas card is always a good idea if you don't really have or WANT to give someone a gift.

Merry Crafting! See you all Wednesday!

Until next time,
Lasagna Claus

P.S.- I said this before but it's so exciting: 28 DAYS UNTIL CHRISTMAS!

More Christmas Activities

Hello Everyone! My deepest apologies for having missed my post TWICE this week! I can't believe that I forgot! I was driving along on Friday and suddenly remembered that I forgot!

Anyway, I'm going to post now!

This week I began all of my classic Christmas activities.

On Friday, I went out with Alex to Michael's in hopes of finding a Christmas craft. I also got some yarn because there was a sale on yarn! I had to get some because I've been working a lot on my Dad's scarf and I seem to be running out of yarn more quickly than I had been before. Oh well! I got some yarn, and some peppermint bark and it was delicious. On the way back, I had a little spaz attack on the road because I changed the radio station and there was CHRISTMAS MUSIC PLAYING! I wasn't expecting Christmas music to be on until a couple days before Thanksgiving, but it must have started earlier this year. Not that I'm complaining though, because I LOVE IT! When I heard the song, I even teared up a little bit! It was nuts...

On Saturday, Alex, Katie and I all went over to the community center and assembled a gingerbread house! It turned out wonderfully if I do say so myself. We spent about three hours working on this house, only to have it sit in our room. It's just so beautiful! How could we eat it?! Plus, with all of the dirty dishes that we had to use from the community center, it probably wouldn't be a good idea to eat it anyway.

Then, today, I spent the day watching Christmas movies on ABC Family with my roommate, Katie. ABC Family's 25 Days of Christmas is starting soon and I'm super excited. I got to watch Holiday in Handcuffs which was really exciting because it's one of my favorites (even if it is a ridiculous plot line). If you don't believe me, check out the other post from about a month ago about the Christmas movies and their ridiculous plots....it's pretty funny actually.

That's about it for today. I promise I'll stay on schedule as best as I can.

Until next time,
Lasagna Claus

P.S.- Only 36 Days Until Christmas! HOLY CRAP! That's so exciting!

How Soon is TOO Soon?

Hello Everyone!

So just a quick update into the life of me and then we'll jump into today's topic. Today, I registered for my spring semester classes. Do you remember last week's blog in which I discussed the pains of winter? Well, this is another one to add to the list. Teenagers (regardless of the fact that we're in college) shouldn't be given complete responsibility for choosing their classes. I was SPAZZING out while trying to pick my classes. One of them didn't have enough seats, another wasn't at the right time...it was a never ending deboccle (did I spell that right?). Anyway, I finally got registered, with some of the classes that I needed to take next semester and everything turned out mighty fine. I just wanted to complain a bit.

SO, here's today's topic: how soon is TOO soon to start singing Christmas carols? to decorate the house (both in and out)? to start buying Christmas gifts? to pick up/set up the tree?

Recently, I've been hearing a lot about these topics; mostly because I happen to be in conversations about the topic because I've been listening to Christmas music since August. However, it seems to me that I happen to be hearing more about this topic than usual. This morning in fact, I was listening to 106.5 (which for you non-Marylanders out there is the station which plays all the newest hits). They happened to be in the very same argument that I have been in with people. One of the DJ's said that she was going to put her lights up this weekend, and the others disagreed stating that it was "too early" to put up lights. Now, I disagreed naturally because I had just put up MY lights AND tree this past weekend with Glenn. However, since I was driving I couldn't call and give my opinion. One woman who called in said that this is just about the time that she begins to decorate as well, so I think it's safe to say that as far as household decorations go, this is about the time to start putting those up.

Now onto the music of the holiday season. Again, this morning on the radio I heard a story about a department store in Canada which had decided to play Christmas music for the season. However, so many customers entered the store and were "appalled at the tunes coming out of the ceiling" that they complained and had the department store shut off the music. REALLY?! You're THAT invested in that store that you complain to the corporate company about the choice of music?! That's stupid, I'm sorry, but that's stupid. I understand how some may have the opinion that now is too soon to starting playing holiday music, that's fine. That being said, some of us quite ENJOY the holiday music and look forward to hearing it in stores. Just because you don't want to listen to it, doesn't mean that you get to destroy the holiday enjoyment of the other shoppers.

As far as gifts go, it's never too soon to start thinking about others. If you see something or make something that you think someone you know would like, GET IT! SAVE IT! It's not that bad.

How do you all feel? I feel as if I'm being one-sided in this aspect (and I am a bit biased). Leave a comment down below and answer me this:

How soon do you start putting up decorations? Do you think others would consider it too soon?
and
How soon do you start listening to Christmas music? How soon do your local radio stations start playing Christmas music?

That's it for today!

Until next time,
Lasagna Claus

The Twelve Pains of Winter

Hello Everyone (and especially Katie),

Today's blog is a little early because a friend of mine decided to be impatient and request me to write RIGHT NOW!

Okay, so today I just started wearing my winter fleece coats and all of that jazz. This morning when I woke up, I made so much static electricity; I probably could have lit a light bulb with all of the static that I had to fight with in my hair this morning. It's to the point where I can HEAR the static...I don't approve.

So I've decided to write today's blog about the things in winter that just SUCK.

1. Static cling: morning, afternoon or evening static cling is always there rearing it's ugly stupid face. Your hair sticks to your face, you shock yourself on the metal appliances or door handles, and your clothes make sounds and sparks when you put on/take them off. It's DANGEROUS. Last year I saw a video of a woman wearing a cashmere sweater (a known harbor-er of static electricity) filling up her gas tank. When she went back to get in her car from the pump, her car and sweater exploded into a shower of sparks and fire! HOW IS THAT NOT TERRIFYING?! I never want to pump my own gas in the summer, let alone when there's the chance of me exploding!

2. Cold cars/steering wheel: I don't know about you all but my car interior is mostly pleather (which, for those who don't know is fake leather). Therefore, when I get in the car, whether it is summer or winter, the car is at the EXTREME ends of the temperature spectrum. More specifically, in the winter, my steering wheel and seats are so cold to the point of me being concerned that Jack Frost himself may pour out of them and possess me. I HAVE TO WEAR WINTER SKIING GLOVES TO DRIVE! That's ridiculous! I would like to know that I'm not alone in this pain. However, on the funny side of this conundrum: one morning I got in my car and my shirt (unbeknownst to me) was high up on my back and not being covered by my jacket. This means that my back went straight onto the un-heated tundra temperature surface of my seat and I FREAKED OUT! It was so cold! Now every time I get in my car I have to make sure all of my skin is covered.

3. Chapped lips/dry skin: THIS STUFF SUCKS! I don't have a lot to say about it because any normal human being (no offends if you're not normal; it's a joke that I'm trying to make here) has experienced both of these. I personally have to put lotion on two and three times a day, and Chapstick at least five times a day. That's just sad...but if I didn't I probably would be chapped beyond belief and rolling on the floor trying to scratch all the itches that present themselves on my skin. It's like winter is out to get you.

4. "Wintery mix": what the hell is this?! I see it all on the Weather Channel and I hate it. Decide on a level of precipitation you stupid clouds! Snow or rain?! Wintery mix just doesn't cut it anymore; especially when I have school riding on it.

I feel as if I'm getting a bit too rant-y so I'm going to stop here.

Until next time,
Lasagna Claus

It's Beginning to Look a LOT like Christmas!

Hello Everyone!

Yes, I probably have used this title before for a post but due to the fact that it is SNOWING outside right now, I thought it appropriate. Anyway, as I sit typing before you, I am currently listening to The Nutcracker Ballad Suite (which is 30 minutes long) on full blast, enjoying my newly dyed brown hair, and thinking up clever things to put in today's blog. OH! Before I jump into the material for today's post, I've decided to do Monday, Wednesday and Friday posts instead of daily posts. That way I get more time to think about what I want to write, and you get a day off from laughing so hard that you get stitches...that IS why you need a day off isn't it?! I'm funny, I promise!!

Okay, I thought of a subject that would be nice to talk about. We've talked about the decorations that are put out for Christmas time, however, I'd like to specifically talk about LIGHTS! My roommate and I have a string of pastel Christmas lights over both of our closets and they just bring life into the room. Of course, we can't sleep with them on due to the fact that they are incredibly bright, and a fire hazard; however, whenever I am in the room, I make a point to plug them in and back in the Christmas-y joy. Sometimes if I'm writing a paper at my desk, I'll just glance over at them and end up spending a full five minutes just staring at the wall.

But enough about my measly string of lights. Do you all remember that movie that was really bad about the family that wanted to have their house seen from outer space with all of their lights? Well, in the future, I want to be one of those houses. I will make it a point in the beginning of November to stock up on all the newest light fixtures and have a team of people come out to affix my house with lights. In fact, I aspire to be like one of the families that lives in my neighborhood. They wrap ALL of the very tall and thin trees in their yard with lights. Now, I'm not talking just a few wraps around the trunk, I'm talking tree-made-out-of-lights kind of light show. Every time I drive by there at night I just want to stop and stare. Here's what it looks like:

Yeah, there's trees underneath those lights. It's a little bit ridiculous, but I love it. However, the family doesn't do the lights themselves so I don't think they would get the same satisfaction and excitement as my family does when we put up our meager strings of lights on the roof.

One last thing about lights: WHAT'S WITH THEM?! One light burns out and the whole strand doesn't work normally?! What is that?! And then if you turn the lights a certain way they blink?! WHAT?! I'm just confused by the whole thought process. Some times the package doesn't even say: "will flash." It's stupid...but I love lights too much not to use them.

That's it!

Until next time,
Lasagna Claus

I'm Back!

Hello Everyone!

After having taken my two month hiatus and settling into college life, I have decided to come back to writing. Like before, I'm going to try my best to write every day, but if I don't make that, at least expect twice or three times a week.

So here's where we stand right now as far as my life: I've currently been wearing a sling and a heating pad on my back for about two days because I took a bad fall. I was running and a friend of mine accidentally tripped me, so...yeah. I've been to a couple doctors and it's been decided that nothing is broken, just a little bumped and bruised. My back, however, is "in spasm" which basically means I need to take some muscle relaxers and...relax...School has been going well, and I'm doing okay in all of my classes. Friends are good, I enjoy having such a close knit group; it's more different than high school because I see these people ALL the time.

Anyway, enough of the personal stuff. Did you know: IT'S 49 DAYS UNTIL CHRISTMAS! That's less than 50! Not by much, but you get the point. I'm really excited for this year because due to the fact that I have like ZERO money, I will be making a bunch of my gifts. I already kind of have a plan for some specific people...

So there you go, all caught up on what's happening here at Stevenson. I'll talk to you all sometime soon!

Until next time,
Lasagna Claus

P.S.- 49 Days! Aren't you excited?!

Change of Plans

Hello Everyone!

Today I got ice cream with some friends...I know this may be somewhat of a repeated topic, but I'd like to discuss Christmas desserts.

I believe before we have talked about all foods, but everyone knows that the best part is dessert.

Most every year I will make pies or a cake. In addition to that, I have made gingerbread houses for the past three years for a contest (which I won!). Some of my favorite desserts are: apple pie, pumpkin pie, cake, cheesecake, and cookies.

Cookies are fun to make with friends and easy to decorate. There's not a lot to discuss about them.

You know what...to ensure that I'm going to have a good topic to talk about until Christmas, I think I am going to start posting either twice or three times a week instead of every day. I know it's somewhat disappointing, however, I think small blogs about repeating topics would be more disappointing than cool blogs without repeating topics twice a week. Trust me on this.

Until next time (which probably won't be tomorrow),
Lasagna Claus

Faithful Friends

Hello Everyone!

Today, believe it or not, was my easy day with only 3 lectures and a seminar! In the middle of those I went to a welcome picnic and learned about clubs. But let's be honest, you didn't come here to read about my day! You came here to read about today's Christmas topic, which is: new friends and the change of seasons.

Sounds a little bit abstract, I know. However, I'd like to tie in my first couple days here at Stevenson with a Christmas topic. So here it goes:

Christmas is a time for making new friends and keeping the old. It's like the song "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" says:

"Faithful friends, who are dear to us,
Gather near to us, once more."

Every year for the past couple years, I have thrown a holiday dinner party kind of thing. It basically consisted of my friends coming over, bringing a dish, and us all sitting down to enjoy friends and food during the holiday season. First of all, I highly recommend (even if you can't cook) that you begin throwing small dinner parties around the holidays; maybe even throw in a Secret Santa to make things more interesting. It's just an all around good idea to get to know new friends better, and keep in contact with old friends.

This year, unfortunately, I cannot throw one of these parties, due to the fact that I am away at school, and so are most of my old friends. I do have new friends that I could indeed invite, however, for some of them it would be too far to drive.

Lastly, I just want to mention that I say old and new friends because my (and probably your) friend circle is constantly changing. I know that coming to a new school, I had to make new friends and I have. Being around different people is good because you get to know new points of view, and find out who you are going to be friends with later in life as well. HOWEVER, if you are like me and you're moving or relocating to a different place whether it's for school, work, or personal reasons, keep in touch with old friends. They're  also a great source for love and nourishment when you need it most.

Until next time,
Lasagna Claus

Friends, there are only 118 Days Until Christmas! Who's throwing a dinner party this year?

Family is the Most Wonderful Thing

Hello Everyone!

Today, my dad came up for a visit to campus and had lunch with me. Afterward, we went to the grocery store and he bought me some snacks for the next couple weeks. I was really grateful to see him, and frankly I've been excited to see him since he told me he could come yesterday.

Therefore, today's topic is going to be about the importance of family, both around and not around the holidays.

Listen here kiddies: family is one of the most important things you can have. Whether these people are related to you by blood or not, someone who is there for you through thick and thin, highs and lows, should be considered family. Whether or not you have these people is beyond my knowledge.

However, for those who do (which I'm hoping is all of you): love your family. Take care of them when they're grey, hang out with them when they're down, make them laugh when it seems like no one else can. I love my family for exactly these reasons, and anyone that you have this relationship to is bound to say the same thing.

This is a short one because, being a college science student with morning classes, I am tired...and need to sleep...and do more homework.

I love you guys! Now, go love your families!

Until next time,
Lasagna Claus

The Magic of Christmas

Hello Everyone!

Tonight I went and saw a magician named Derek Hughes at the Rockland Center at Stevenson. First off all, he combines comedy with magic, and that was hilarious! Second, at the end of the show, he pulled a card literally out of his butt. Pretty much the most hilarious thing I have ever seen.

On another note, I'd like to discuss the magic of Christmas tonight.

Some people ask me: "Hey Emily, why do you like Christmas so much?" Of course, they expect "Because of the presents of course" but that's not my answer. My answer is simply the feel of the holidays. I just enjoy the mentality that most people (excluding the scrooges and grinches out there) have. Most everyone is courteous to one another, gives money to charity, and is generally happy. I just love the feel of the holidays. I'm not sure if I'm explaining it well, but those of you who have experienced it will know what I'm talking about.

The magic of Christmas envelops some more than others. I admit, there are some people out there that don't quite enjoy Christmas as much as some of us, but really, why not? If you are one of those people, let me know why in the comments? I really don't mean to sound like "WHY AREN'T YOU LIKE THE REST OF US?!" I genuinely want to know why you don't love the holidays because I have never really experienced anything BUT love for the holidays.

Believe me, I could talk about magic for hours, but being a college student now, I have some studying that I need to get done, and...I need sleep.

Thanks for reading!

Until next time,
Lasagna Claus

Movie Romances Make NO Sense

Hello Everyone!

Today I attended one of the weirdest things I have ever attended. What was it you ask? It was Sex Ed Boot Camp. Yeah, I went to that. In the interest of preserving the mostly G rating that I have on this blog, I would like to just chat about Christmas ROMANCES.

Almost every holiday movie that ABC Family comes up with is a romance. It's like: WE GET IT! You like love stories! But I digress. Anyway, I would just like to discuss a few of these romances with you and talk about the fact that they would never really happen in real life. It's kind of a downer, but I think it needs to be discussed.

1. The Twelve Dates of Christmas: this woman gets hit on the head and goes through what is basically described as "the groundhog day syndrome." She repeats Christmas Eve the same way twelve times, and then basically finds her true love. Just an odd story overall, but when put into a repeating scenario, what is supposed to be funny turns into a repetitive mess that I, personally, did not enjoy.

2. Holiday in Handcuffs: DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED. First of all, Melissa Joan Hart's character kidnaps Mario Lopez's character. KIDNAPPING! I mean, I understand Stockholm syndrome, but still, falling for a kidnapper, especially one as crazy as Melissa Joan Hart is a bit overboard. The fact that he sees her hanging out and being herself with her family, and then having one night where they eat oreos together shouldn't persuade him to leave a lucrative engagement to marry someone that, again, KIDNAPPED HIM.

Since I don't necessarily know a lot more movies like that that I can intelligently, or semi-intelligently, rant about, I am going to take this time to write a formal apology. For the next couple months, because I will be so busy with school, I am probably not going to be writing blogs as long as they have been. Things will be shorter, and the topics may repeat themselves. That being said, I am going to try my best to get a post up every day, as I have been, and continue to entertain you guys with my wit and charm.

That's about it!

Until next time,
Lasagna Claus

Turtles!

Hello everyone!

Today's blog is going to be about turtles. It is not about christmas because i am really late posting. I apologize for the shortness; I lost track of time.

So here's some fun facts about turtles:
1. Some are green
2. They live in shells
3. Sometimes they get lonely
4. They enjoy lettuce
5. Some are aquatic
6. I bet they play poker
7. They're cool, like bowties
8. Some are awkward
9. They dig holes to lay eggs
10. When a male turtle wants to mate, a female turtle protects herself with her fins.

That's it! Just under the gun!

A Mustang Christmas

Hello everyone!

Right now, as I blog, I am seated in the nosebleed section of Mustang Stadium! Those who know me well know I am attending my freshman year of college at Stevenson University! It's very exciting!

Anyways, this blog is not really going to be a huge blog. I just wanted to iterate that our school colors are green, and the quarterbacks were red. Christmas colors everyone! Christmas colors! It's like the school was made for me!

Anyway, I promise I will put more effort into tomorrows blog, but tonight's is cut short.

On another night, I am wearing my moose hat that you might not know about. It's probably the best hat ever.

Until next time,
Lasagna Claus

Christmas Bookworm

Hello Everyone!

Today I moved into my new home for the next four years. The move was stressful but I'm really enjoying having everything moved in and set up. My room is very nice (I got the bigger one) and even though my bed is ridiculously high up off the ground, I like it. My roommate is super nice and we had gotten to know each other before school so that's good.

I haven't quite decided what today's post is going to be about but I figure if I ramble on about school and what I've done today, I'll eventually think of something Christmas-y to talk about.  So far today I have been greeted at the door by VERY enthusiastic college students, berated by boxes of things, called "legit" (in a good way) and eaten a not so satisfying lunch. Have I thought of anything to write about? Not yet. Let's continue: I'm in my room now waiting for my roommate to find out her classes so that our families can go over and buy textbooks. AHA! I've decided what to talk about: BOOKS! More specifically, Christmas books.

Okay, so every Christmas Eve my mom, Glenn and I sit on mom's bed and read a selection of Christmas books. These selections are: Santa Cows, The Cajun Night Before Christmas, The Grinch that Stole Christmas, The Twelve Bugs of Christmas, and occasionally The Polar Express. Don't know what these books are? Well, I'll tell you.

1. Santa Cows: this book is about cows that come to visit a family on Christmas eve and play baseball. It is written in the format of The Night Before Christmas, complete with rhymes. It sounds odd, but if you're looking for a new book, I highly recommend this.

2. The Cajun Night Before Christmas: also written in the format of The Night Before Christmas, The Cajun Night Before Christmas explores the classic rhymes of The Night Before Christmas with a Cajun theme. All of the words are shortened somewhat, and Glenn is the only one who can read it but it's fun.

3. The Grinch that Stole Christmas: you should know. you should just know.

4. The Twelve Bugs of Christmas: this is a book that is supposed to be sung to the Twelve Days of Christmas. It is from a series which writes all sorts of "bug" books; for example, Valentine's Bugs, Easter Bugs and Halloween Bugs.

5. The Polar Express: a popular book and now a Tom Hanks movie, the Polar Express is a Christmas classic

That's about it!

What do you guys read as far as Christmas books go? Any that I should try out for this year?

Until next time,
Lasagna Claus

Ornamental, my dear Watson.

Hello Everyone!

Today, I packed my entire life into 3 boxes, a small crate, a contractor's trash bag, and a suitcase. That's right! I'm heading off to college soon! I'm scared of course, but also very excited to be starting this new chapter in  my life. Anyway, today's post will be about...transition. I'm thinking this is going to be a short one because I have to really think about how to connect this transition to Christmas but....OH! I've got it. I'm going to talk about Christmas ornaments.

Every time that my family gets a new ornament, my mom says  "you know, when you move out, we'll have to make a box of the ornaments that you want to take with you." Ornaments are one of the most interesting things to me (as far as decorations go) because I believe that they hold the most history. My mom has kept ornaments that her grandmother made way back when. I'm looking forward to collecting all of my own ornaments and putting them on a tree each year. Right now there are just a few that I am really attached to but I have a goal to have at least 100.

I enjoy ornaments as I'm sure you can tell. This year in fact, I want to construct ornaments to give to family and friends. Oh, shoot! I just ruined the surprise...oh well.

Here's a quaint anecdote: every year I give Glenn a special ornament that I pick out very early in the Christmas season. Two years ago I bought this really cool Devil head that is bright red with great features and purple sparkly horns. Last year, I bought him a purple octopus. When I brought it home, I was going to wrap it and accidentally broke one of the legs off. The legs were all really thin pieces of glass, but luckily the leg didn't shatter so I could just super glue it back on. It looked like it was never even broken, and the break itself just added character and a good story for Christmas morning.

I'm sorry that I don't have much more to talk about...

Until tomorrow,
Lasagna Claus

Have an Eventful Yuletide!

Hello Everyone!

Today has been a boring day; I mostly sat around. It is also going to be one of those days in which the topic for today's blog is picked randomly. Without further ado, today's topic is.....Special Christmas Celebrations. What do I mean by "special celebrations?" Well, we're going to chat about all of those things that you can get out and watch or do or participate in to celebrate the holidays around town. Actually, I have to admit, today's topic isn't entirely random. I just recently found out that the Maryland Renaissance Festival is coming to town next weekend! I always look forward to it, and it is the start of the special events that I would eventually like to attend.

Here are just a few that are fun to do with family and friends, or even by yourself:

1. Attend a tree lighting ceremony: a lot of towns that have big trees hold tree lighting ceremonies; of course there's always New York City and Washington, D.C. as well, but those are harder to get into. I have never been to a tree lighting ceremony myself, but I hear they are very interesting and I look forward to attending one eventually!

2. See Santa: most malls and/or department stores are visited by Santa each year and these visits are fun for all ages! When I was a baby, my mom's mom was a Santa's Helper at the Columbia Mall, and I think it would be fun to be one of those one year. Even if you don't have children of your own or small kids in the family, it is still entertaining to sit and watch all of the small children's delight as Santa walks out onto the stage.

3. Ice skating: though not necessarily an event, ice skating is super fun for all ages! Even just learning how to skate can be entertaining, given you don't fall on your face a lot. One year I was skating during the day (which I don't recommend because the ice can be substantially more slippery) and I fell and smacked my head into the ice. I didn't lose consciousness or have a concussion, but I did have a nasty bump and some dizziness. Therefore, I recommend that if you do not know how to skate, don't go by yourself the first time. Find someone who knows how to skate, or even just make a new friend at the rink to make sure that you don't fall all over the play.

4. Go to an amusement park: some amusement parks hold special events for Christmas, especially Disney world. I've been to an amusement park at Christmas once, but since I was very small I don't have the greatest memory of it. I'd recommend it to those who really want to experience Christmas in a big way though.

That's about all for today!

Until next time,
Lasagna Claus

Let's Get Together

Hello everyone!

Today I attended a party with some of my friends so that I could see them before I left for college. We watched a movie called "the league of extraordinary men." I quite enjoyed it, and in fact I am writing this blog during the movie. I know, I know: Emily quit being so antisocial, but I'm paying just as much attention to the movie as I am paying to this blog.

Today's blog is going to be somewhat of a repeat topic, only because I want to make sure I get a blog posted today. Now my little kiddies, we are going to discuss family gatherings.

My dad's family and I get together on Christmas eve. Our normal schedule is this:
7- everyone begins to arrive, with the Ringenbach tradition of if you're not 15 minutes early, you're late.
7:15- everyone ogles over the amazing dessert that I brought and how much everyone has grown.
7:30- we all sit down for a large helping of Christmas lasagna.
7:50- everyone ogles over the dessert I made as it is sliced and handed out.
8:00- the youngest kids pass out presents to everyone, and then sit down to open their presents as well.
8:30- everyone begins to say their goodbyes and head home.
9:00- I arrive back at my moms house for the night.

As well as my dads family Christmas traditions, my mom and Glenn and I have traditions as well. After I arrive home, mom talks to me about all of the amazing gifts and money that I received and then we all settle in moms bed to read Christmas stories. Normally I would tell you the books that we read but I would like to postpone that for another post.

Question of the Day: what do you all do for Christmas? Do you have traditions like me?

Until next time,
Lasagna Claus

Surprise!

Hello Everyone!

Today, as I sat in the kitchen, my step-dad Glenn came home and began to eat potato chips. He dropped one on the counter, and my mother picked it up and put it back in the bag. As a joke, Glenn got the chip back out and put it back on the counter. In a split second, my mom had grabbed a water bottle, opened it, and thrown water on Glenn. It was such a surprise to all of us and we laughed for minutes afterward. Therefore, today's subject is going to be surprises.

I don't know about you guys, but personally I prefer to not know what I'm going to be given for Christmas. I'm not one to not submit a list, or ask Santa for something really special, and then hope for that gift; however, I submit those lists early so that I can have time to forget what I asked for in hopes of being surprised Christmas morning. For example, last year I had asked for Buffy the Vampire Slayer books. I assumed that Mom would just buy me the other two out of the trilogy that I had started to buy. Unbeknownst to me, she purchased every single Buffy book that had ever been written. When I awoke Christmas morning, Mom and Glenn had set up a trail down the stairs, through the dining room and up to the tree. It was so fun getting that surprise as my first present!

If you are one of those people who want to be told what they're getting for Christmas, why do you want to know? I mean this in no offense; I am just curious as to why you wouldn't want the surprise in the morning.

If you aren't one of those people who want to know what you're getting, what's the best surprise you've had Christmas morning?

I think that's just about it for today. I'm sorry for the very short blog, but there's just not much to discuss when it comes to surprising people.

Until next time,
Lasagna Claus

Christmas Season...Starting Sooner Every Year

Hello Everyone!

So today I went out shopping for all my college clothing, notebooks, and fantastic scarves. While I was out with my grandmother, we decided to stop into the local craft store, Michael's. Right inside the store, my eyes were bombarded with Halloween decorations. After I walked a little bit farther into the store, I happened upon the first Christmas craft supplies and various small decorations of the season. Now, we all know that stores put out merchandise too early, BUT I am actually more excited to see these. Once the Christmas decorations come out in the stores, it's only an amount of time before those very decorations are in the malls and out on the streets! I just can't wait when the cycle starts to roll!

That being said, even with my affinity towards all things Christmas, I DO believe that August 18th is a little too soon. In a Straight No Chaser song called The Christmas Can-Can, the band says:

"Christmas season, starting sooner every year.
It's October, stores with plastic Christmas trees."

There is more that I would like to share with you but I think I'm going to save that for another blog.

All kidding aside, I actually took pictures of the displays (which I probably shouldn't have? I'm not sure) BUT the emails that I sent them in never arrived on my computer and it being 10:30 PM already, I just decided to scrap the pictures. However, just imagine all of the various Christmas yarns, crafts, ornaments, and small plastic trees that would have abounded your eyes had you walked into the same Michael's I had today.

That's just about it for today.

Until next time,
Lasagna Claus

P.S.- 129 Days Until Christmas! We've passed the 130's everyone!
P.P.S.- I went out just a couple minutes ago with my cousin in search of "Hot Fries." At the time, I had no idea what they were, but as I sit writing this very blog, my mouth is on fire....but strangely I quite enjoy the snack. Monosodium Glutamate: YUM!

Second Best is the First Loser

Hello Everyone!

Today I spent a lot of time playing games with my cousin Tyler. This blog post was originally supposed to be directed towards his "awesomeness" but since my blog (contrary to some opinions) does in fact have a theme so I've decided to dedicate this to talking about all of the activities you can do with your family during the holidays.

Now, there's one of the most obvious which would be making a gingerbread house. I'm not sure if you remember but those are a favorite in my house, and we've won three competitions. Anyway, making a gingerbread house is always fun but if you're not baking or architecturally oriented, here are some alternatives.

1. Watch or Record Jeopardy! Then, watch and keep score: Tyler and I have been playing each night along with the recordings and it both boosts your trivia knowledge, and in my case lowers self esteem just a few points. Just make sure that you're allowed to have gloating rights after the game ends.

2.) Play Wii Tennis: if you have a wii, which is pretty common nowadays, the sports games are great. You may even end up beating your cousin (who usually wins everything) for 13 games straight.

3.) Play Cards: there are tons of games that you can play with family and friends. A couple of my favorites are rummy, gin rummy, kings in the corner, war, and president. Some of those may not be known all over, but I highly recommend them because you don't need more than two people, but you CAN play each of them with more people (theoretically).

4.) Board Games: a generous time swallower and fun for all ages! A few of my favorites are: Apples to Apples, Monopoly, Life, Killer Bunnies and the Quest for the Magic Carrot, and Clue. I have to admit that Tyler and I played a few of these and I was annihilated BUT we're playing Apples to Apples tonight and hopefully I can win...just even once.

That's all that I got for you tonight! Have fun with your families! There is no reason to not hang out with your family for just a little each night, and especially during the holidays. It's always fun to see the adults and the children laughing together because a child chose "wombats" for the word "angering" in Apples to Apples.

Until next time,
Lasagna Claus

Gee, the traffic is... not very terrific, not very terrific at all!

Hello Everyone!

So today I went into to work, and then travelled into Washington, D.C. with my cousin for one of his prestigious job interviews. It was pretty fun, except for the fact that it took almost two hours round trip. Traffic in and around D.C. is really time consuming, so I've decided that travelling for Christmas will be today's theme. I know what you're thinking: "Hasn't that topic been written about before?" Well, yes and no. I HAVE indeed written about being away from home for Christmas and the idea that if you have the opportunity to go home, you should go home. However, we haven't actually discussed the actual travelling.

Whether you go by bus, car, or plane...or mystical spaceship or some other means of travel, the problem is this: you're ALWAYS going to encounter some amount of traffic. Yes, some places may have more traffic than others, but even being stuck behind a really slow driver should be considered traffic. Anyway, my advice to you is to be patient and crank up the holiday tunes. I'm one of those people where if I have music, and I'm in traffic, I'm obviously not enjoying the traffic, but the music makes it more tolerable.

In one of my favorite Christmas tunes, the artist says "From Atlantic to Pacific, gee, the traffic is terrific." Seriously? Traffic stinks, we all know it; but, we have to deal with it to get to the delicious treats, loving family, and hopefully white Christmas awaits us.

From a personal point of view, I've never had to travel a great distance for Christmas. The most that I have to do each year is about a half hour over the Bay Bridge to get to the Eastern Shore of Maryland (which is basically the middle of nowhere). It doesn't take long, and if you leave at the right time, you won't encounter much traffic. I'm not going to lie; if you leave at five o'clock, you're going to hit rush hour, and you're going to be stuck on the bridge for hours. Just take a half hour, have a cup of hot chocolate, and THEN leave; maybe you can even be "fashionably late."

One thing that I must add, because my mother does read this blog (yeah, my mom's invested in my activities, isn't yours?!) is that we did travel to Florida one year for Christmas. However, since I don't really remember the experience, judging by the fact that I was very very young, I don't really count it as having been away and traveling during the holiday season.

I think that's just about all I have for you today.

Until next time,
Lasagna Claus

Crafty Christmas Crafting

Hello Everyone!

Today, I went to work and spent the majority of the time making various jars of preserves. We've been working on this project for quite a while, and although I can't go into much detail (without having to kill you afterward), I can tell you we made Plum-Nectarine, and Raspberry-Lime preserves today. This got me to thinking about the gifts that I give people each year, some of them homemade. This year I plan on making both preserves and homemade candles! Last year, I made soap and truffles, and the year before that I made scarves and ornaments. Without further ado, the topic of today's blog, as you have probably so far gleaned, is: homemade gifts.

Now, over the years, I have become more and more prone to giving homemade gifts for two reasons. First, I enjoy the look on someones face when they see a gift that you specially made for them; and second, because I was low on cash but still wanted to give amazing gifts.

I know, I know: homemade gifts sound like a pain; but seriously, I highly recommend them! You don't have to go all out and give gifts that take months to complete, but a simple gift is well worth the trouble. Some of these simple gifts include: truffles, preserves, or ornaments. As far as truffles go, you might want to make sure that you're kitchen-oriented before you start to throw things into a bowl; that being said, if you AREN'T kitchen-oriented, I don't want to discourage you from trying this: just don't burn your house down, that's all I ask. Anyway, truffles are super delicious balls of ganache that can be rolled in various toppings like nuts, cocoa powder or even crushed up peppermints. Truffles come in all shapes and sizes, and all in all, they're not that hard to make. My advice to future truffle makers are google recipes, and then forget all that, and find a youtube video. Written recipes, while sometimes helpful, don't hold a candle to video recipes. If you can find a credible source for video recipes, it's better to see a recipe being made as opposed to reading about it. In fact, the Food Network might have good videos AND written recipes that you can watch/print out to work with.

Moving on: PRESERVES. I just recently discovered preserves and I just have one thing to say about them: anyone can make them! Honestly, I was terrified about starting to make preserves. I was so afraid that I would mess them up and they wouldn't set up, or I would burn the mixture while cooking it, or I wouldn't have the right ingredients. Once I made one batch at work, I just kept looking forward to the next time when we made them. Preserves can be made with any fruit, vegetable, or even bag of rocks that you want to cook down and devour. Basically, you combine fruit, sometimes lemon juice, sugar, and pectin in a pan and cook it down. It's not exactly that, so don't go out and put all that stuff in a pan and expect it to turn into preserves. Let's talk about pectin for a second. Pectin is usually a powdered product which, when added to the fruit mixture combines with fruit chemicals (fruitmicals, as it were) and enables the mixture to set and gel into a jelly-ness. Pectin isn't one of those things that you can skip out on. If you want preserves, whether it be jelly or jam, you NEED pectin. I think (and don't quote me on this) that you can purchase the pectin that the Ball jar company makes at most grocery stores. While we're on the Ball subject, you'll need jars and I've found that Ball jars are the most reliable and useful jars for making good portions and delicious jams. I think you can buy in bulk if you're making BUNCHES of jars from the Ball website, BUT you can also buy one crate of twelve jars at most grocery stores (again, don't quote me on that; I'm going off of assumptions that I've made from my work). Like with truffles, do some research, but preserves and different canned products are definitely worth the work; that being said, you have to be willing to have a couple burns throughout the process (there's a LOT of hot stuff going on).

Lastly, I just want to talk about some small projects that you can do to give out. Ornaments can be made out of paper, or even made out of empty eggs (which I have done) and I guarantee that your gift recipients will LOVE them. Even soap, while a little more labor intensive, is great! Any craft store will have soap that is already made up that you can melt and scent yourself. You can also buy fun molds and even put fake flowers or holiday decorations into the melted soap. You don't even have to use a stove! Most solid soap mix can be microwaved and then poured into a mold. I made soap last year, and every person I gave it to felt very special. As well as giving out the gifts, making soap is a fun activity for friends and family to do together.

There are TONS of other gifts that you can make that I just don't have the space or attention span to type out and explain. I just have one thing to mention. Glenn, my step-dad, makes ukuleles and he made me one for Christmas a couple years ago. It wasn't finished when he brought it up Christmas morning, and...it's still not finished. Nevertheless, I will be JUST as excited to receive it when it's finished, as I would have been that Christmas.

Question(s) of the Day: Do you think you will at least consider making homemade gifts this year? If so, what will you make? Is it one of the things I suggested above or something new? Tell me about it in the comment section down below!

Until next time,
Lasagna Claus

Caroling While You Work

Hello Everyone!

Today, I went to work, and then came home and did...nothing. I was supposed to be waiting for the cable guy to come and fix the television in the basement, BUT he never came; so there's that. For the good part of the day, I played various Christmas songs on ukulele and piano. Therefore, I think today's post should be dedicated to the tunes of the holidays.

I'd like to start out by saying that on JUST my iPod, I have accrued....277 Christmas songs. TWO HUNDRED AND SEVENTY SEVEN! That's almost THREE HUNDRED! I'm not one to defend this; it has gone a little bit overboard. Don't judge. I can hear you judging even through this screen. Yeah, you! Right there!

Anyway, there are a couple songs that I feel should be mentioned because not only do they not get enough play on the radio, but they are AWESOME.

1. Dominick the Italian Christmas Donkey, by Lou Monte: This song features an accented Lou Monte explaining about Santa's pal Dominick who helps deliver presents in Italy on Christmas Eve. He does this because apparently the reindeer "can't climb the hills of Italy" to which I say, WHAT?! First, reindeer can fly, and second, NO. Reindeer are magical and while I quite enjoy Dominick, he doesn't have to steal the show from the reindeer. Why can't they just work together?

2. Crabs for Christmas, by David DeBoy: A CLASSIC Baltimorian/Marylander song. It is all about a grown man who goes into a department store in Texas and asks Santa for crabs. I don't want to give anything away, but seriously, check that one out.

3. All songs by Straight No Chaser: A ridiculously good acapella band, Straight No Chaser puts out Christmas albums as well as popular music albums throughout the year. While their most popular songs are The Christmas Can-Can (which I LOVE and highly recommend) and The Twelve Days of Christmas, the radio stations should take it upon themselves to explore the other options; because although the other songs are just classic versions of the tunes (and not funny or altered like the most popular two) they are good, and deserve to be heard by Christmas music enthusiasts like myself and others.

4. Santa Baby, by...Michael Buble? : I bet you thought I was going to say Madonna. Now, I love the original version of this song, but I always wondered if anyone was going to modernize it. Last year, I discovered Buble's version. He both modernizes the lyrics, AND changes them to be from a male point of view. For example, instead of a "sable" under the tree, he asks for a "Rolex" and instead of Santa "Baby," he croons Santa "Buddy." As well as Santa Baby, Buble produced an entire Christmas album which includes some very interesting duets. I'm partial to the version of Jingle Bells that he did with the Puppini Sisters.

5. White Christmas, by Michael Buble and Shania Twain: I just want to start out by saying that I only liked ONE version of White Christmas before I discovered this. That version was by The Drifters and I discovered it through watching the movie The Santa Clause. I just really enjoy the "dup-dup" (if you don't know what I'm talking about, listen to it on youtube). Anyway, Michael Buble turned that version of the song into a duet and sung it with another of my favorite singers: Shania Twain. I have to admit, I thought he ruined the song when I heard it the first time on the radio, BUT I bought the song on a whim, and now I'm in love with it.

So those are the songs that I feel deserve mentions and listens, but I am a fanatic about all Christmas music. I just think that different versions of the classics, and entire new songs should get played just as much as Bing Crosby's White Christmas or Perry Como's There's No Place Like Home for the Holidays.

Question of the Day: What are your favorite Christmas songs? Any of the ones that I mentioned above? Let me know in the comments down below!

Until next time,

Fruits and Pastries and Hams, OH MY!

Good Afternoon Everyone!

Today I did not do anything of importance in such a way that I could connect it to today's post. Therefore, today's topic is going to be random and it is: Christmas food.

Now, we all know that my family chows down on a large Christmas lasagna on the eve of the holiday, but what does everyone else eat? Well, here in America there are several traditions; some good, some bad. Let's start with the good: hams, turkeys, puddings, cookies, pies, and cakes. Being the resident pastry maker for both of my families, I am responsible for making such cookies, pies and cakes.

A few years back, I got my hands on a Wilton catalog of cookie designs which I haven't yet gotten to use. This year, however, while I am at school, my roommate and I have decided that we will make some cookies to dispense throughout the rooms on our floor. I'm really looking forward to making really delicate and intricate designs with both flow icing and royal icing. The difference between the two, for those who don't know, is the consistency and use on cookies. Flow icing is used to make a smooth, level, and shiny surface that completely covers the surface of a cookie evenly. Royal icing hardens when it dries, and is used to outline cookies so that the flow icing will stay on the top. As well as cookies, royal icing is used mostly in gingerbread house making. Speaking of that, my step dad and I have won the Historic Annapolis Gingerbread Contest three years running! We decided not to compete again because I won't have the time to work on it. Usually we worked from the end of October to the beginning of December, and since I'm in school, we just can't spin that.

In addition to making cookies, I will also be making pies for the holiday season. I'm sending in my apple pie for judging in the county fair, and I'm making all the pies for Thanksgiving for my Dad's family. How about you guys? Do you make pies?

Anyway, I guess we should talk about the bad. One word: fruitcake. If made correctly, it can be tolerated and even slightly tasteful. BUT, when made badly, it can be hard as a rock, and teeth breaking. I, myself have never made fruitcake, but I would like to in the future. However, I understand that there are quite a lot of different alcohols involved so I can't right now. Perhaps sometime in the future, or maybe not, who knows?

I hope your mouth is slobbering with all the delicious sugarplums that are dancing in your head. I want to know, what do you guys eat for the holidays? Anything unusual?

Until next time,
Lasagna Claus

Christmas Through History

Hello fellow humans!

Today I am writing a post on my new iPhone! It's exciting, but also beside the point. I'm just telling you so that you know to disregard any mistakes that I possibly make. It just got too late to write a post on my computer and I have this cool app on my phone.

So let's get down to business. Today I attended the American History Museum in Washington DC. Therefore, todays theme will be Christmas through the ages! However, since I was lazy and decided to play games with my cousin and friends, I didn't get the research in that I wanted to. I can however, spout some knowledge at you that just might fill up your brain space enough until tomorrow.

I hear through the grapevines that Victorian Christmases were very elaborately decorated and people would often throw lavish parties and invite whole neighborhoods over for fun and feast. In fact, for the past two years, I myself have been having a holiday feast just after school gets out for Christmas! I want to keep it going but all my friends will be attending different colleges and such so that might not happen.

Sometime later I will probably come back to the history and if I remind myself I will make sure to make that blog drip with juicy historical information that will blow your mind hole wide open!

That's all I have for you today, I'm going to go watch shark week until 4 in the morning!

Until next time,
Lasagna Claus

P.S.- 135 Days Until Christmas!
Also, Fun Fact: parking garages in Washington DC are closed on Saturdays (even though today is Sunday).

We Need a Little Christmas, Right This Very Minute

Good morning everyone!

Today, my cousins moved into the apartment that we had been preparing in the basement. While I watched from a vantage point on the porch (I'm lazy, okay?!), I thought about some of the things that they brought in; and the possibility of some of those things being holiday decorations; which is what today's discussion is going to be about.

Now, I don't know about you guys, but Christmas decorating is a HUGE deal at my house. Mostly because we do it early, but also because we have a lot of decorations. In our basement storage area, we have at least seven crates of Christmas decorations, in addition to a fake tree, an outdoor wreath for the door, and all of the lights. After we cart all of those upstairs, we take it tub by tub and empty out all the decorations. Then, we just walk around the house and assimilate the decorations into the other things in our house. Usually, we end up with a box full of normal house things that are then replaced after the Christmas decorations come down; which is usually sometime in...March. We like to really milk the niceness out of the Christmas decor. In fact, one year we left the tree up through July!

On another note, I'd also like to discuss the benefits of constructing your own decorations as opposed to buying some in a store. For example, we still have a paper chain that my mother and I constructed when I was really young that we decorate with. I mean, granted, it's a little messed up BUT I really enjoy unpacking it every year. What I'm trying to say is that if you have the time, it's good to make some of your own decorations. Christmas crafts are interesting and fun, and good quality time for you and your family or friends.

And we've come to one of the last but also most important decorating items: lights. I know, I know, they're a pain to put up; however, when you're finished and your house is all lit up for the holidays it's well worth it. I look forward to designing new and fun things to do with the lights that we put up on the house, even if it's just a couple of strings. Believe me, I want it to look like those crazy houses that use millions of lights, but we just don't have the time. In fact, our neighbors (who have quite a bit of money) wrap each of the trees in their yard with lights. They cover every inch of every tree and I bet you could probably see their house from space. My mother even took a picture of it one year and put it on Facebook with the caption: "Glenn finally got the lights up!" A small lie, but well worth the reactions from friends and family. The only tip I have for you about lightage is to have an idea of what you want to do with the lights before you climb on up a ladder and start working on it, AND make sure to package your lights correctly and make sure that they work BEFORE you attach them to your house. Take a couple minutes inside to work on untangling lights and plugging them in to make sure they work.

That's just about all I have for you today.

Until next time,
Lasagna Claus

I'll Be Home for Christmas

Good afternoon!

So as some of you know, I will be heading off to attend my freshman year of college this fall. It's a little scary, but I'm looking forward to meeting new people, taking new classes, and expanding my horizons. However, it also got me thinking about the things that I might be missing while I'm away; which leads me to the subject of today's blog: Christmas Away from Home: Good or Bad?

Now, I'm a firm believer that Christmas, and indeed all of the important holidays should be spent with family and friends, whether it be at your home town or just where you're settled for the moment. However, if that's not possible (and for some people it's not) make sure that you surround yourself with those who love you.

With my holiday break from school, I will be spending the holidays back at home which I'm really excited for. That being said, I'm looking forward to having new people, as well as old to spend it with.

This post is going to be a short one, compared to the others. However, I'd like to leave you all with one final message: If you are trying to decide whether to go home for the holidays, GO! Your family will love you for it, and you'll have fun...well, most of you will. Some people will be barraded by screaming, drunkenness and burnt out Christmas lights, BUT sometimes even that can be fun.

Until next time,
Lasagna Claus

Just a heads up: 137 days until Christmas!
OH! And only 2 days until SHARK WEEK! (Which is almost as good, but not quite).

"You'll Shoot Your Eye Out!"

Good evening all!

Today the family and I were working on cleaning out the basement and we found some old stethoscopes. This reminded me of the movie "The Santa Clause" with Tim Allen and the part of that movie when he visits the doctor. Upon examination, his heart beat sounds like "Jingle Bells" and other holiday songs; which leads me to the topic of today's discussion: Holiday Movies and Television Shows.

Now, I don't know about you guys, but I always look forward to the end of the year Christmas specials on all of my favorite television shows. Even if I'm watching old shows in the middle of the summer, I love love love the holiday episodes. Sometimes networks bring back old characters, embrace funny storylines (that don't necessarily coincide with the plot of the show) and celebrate the holidays with intense cheer! For example, in one of the Warehouse 13 holiday episodes that I recently saw, the "artifact" was one that caused an alternate Santa Claus-like persona to arise out of someone's personality, except this one was evil. All in all, I enjoy watching the holiday episodes of almost every show, even if I don't watch it normally. Some of the specific ones that I would recommend are: Eureka (on SyFy), 30 Rock (on NBC), and Spongebob Squarepants (even if it is a kid's show).

Let's move onto the movies shall we? Now, I'm not one to say that I don't love the classics like It's a Wonderful Life and White Christmas BUT I've found that some of the more recently made holiday movies are better. Around Christmas of 2011, Arthur Christmas came out, and although it was geared toward children, the humor and the quality of the film makes it well worth checking out. In addition, the Santa Clause series of movies are great, although they get worse as the series progresses; the first one was definitely the best. However, I also have some differing opinions from some other holiday movie enthusiasts. The pinnacle of this separation is "A Christmas Story." I watched it once and while I found it funny in some parts, I didn't find any of the characters relatable and I'm not a big fan of movies that feature mostly children. Actually that's not true...I LOVE Home Alone (all of them). They're great! Culkin really knows how to make hurting people, and rigging your house to be a death trap look hilarious!
One more thing: ABC Family. I know, I know; some of the television shows are overdone and stupid, BUT I have to give them props for the holiday movies that they put out each year. I still watch or record Holiday in Handcuffs whenever possible.

Well, that's just about all I have to say about holiday films. How do you guys feel about them? What are your favorites? Let me know in the comment section down below.

Until a later date,
Lasagna Claus

Baby, it's [almost] cold outside!

Hello Fellow Holiday Enthusiasts!

As I sit at my desk at 1:06 AM, I begin to drift back to fond memories of the Christmas season when I would awake at this hour, wanting to run downstairs and open presents. Well, I would not awake at exactly 1:06 but you get the idea. As a child, I would start to celebrate the holidays beginning just after my birthday...in July. It was perfect! Right after Christmas, I would look forward to my birthday for the next six months, and then the six after that: Christmas.

Often called one of the most generous, wonderful, and spirit filled seasons, the holidays always brought a sense of warmth and joy into my household. This being my first post, I suppose I should explain the title of this writing project. Christmas Lasagna. Simple, yet complex. You see kids, back in the day (just last year in fact) I realized something all too interesting about the family on my Dad's side. Whereas most families chow down on Christmas turkey, or Christmas ham, or perhaps even a "roast beast," my family wolfs down one giant lasagna, complete with garlic bread. You would assume Italian heritage, am I right? Alas, we are not. I guess we're just weird. THAT'S THE FUN OF IT! Christmas, and indeed all of the holidays at the end of the year, are dedicated to being with family and of course, eating your weight in pies, cookies, tarts, biscuits, hams, and many other deliciously fattening holiday treats.

Anyway, as I sat thinking of these fond memories and listening to all of the holiday music on my iPod (...again) I decided that I could not be the only one that shares this excitement and enjoyment of the anticipation of the holiday season, and the holiday itself. Thus, Christmas Lasagna was born.

As we creep closer and closer to the end of the year, I hope you will join me on a magical journey appreciating the twelve "pains" of Christmas: the shopping for and wrapping of billions of presents for friends and family, the rigging of the lights, the preparations for Christmas dinner and the outrageous in-laws (although I don't have to deal with those yet). Instead of dwelling on all that we have to do this holiday season, and the stress that awaits us all, let's take a minute and appreciate the crazed commercialism that does indeed bring us all together on December 25th.

Until a later date,
Lasagna Claus (get it?)

And remember boys and girls: 139 Days Until Christmas.

Merry August 8th, everyone!
